Niegall Joegga

Niegall Joegga (pronounced "nee-gall joe-gah") is named after a legendary general in the great Shou empire in the continent folks around Narfell call "Kara Tur". It's the kind of name you could call wishful thinking on his parents' part, because his father and grandfather are hardly general material. Rather, they are low-ranking scribes (middle managers) in the civil bureaucracy of the capital city, which is spelled Karatin in Faerunian languages, but sounds more like "ka radin" when Niegall says it.
Niegall has lived in Karatin all his life, but due to some odd twists of fate and politicking, which I won't explain in detail here aside from mentioning that they involved his father becoming the fall-guy for a corrupt district governor, wound up being transferred to an assistant bean-counter post in the backside of nowhere (the backside of nowhere for the people of the Great Shou Empire being the far northwestern provinces). By all rights, this should have led to Niegall's being eaten by giant ants or boiled alive by hungry barbarians. But adversity has a way of bringing out those hidden talents people have, especially talents like running really fast and staying on a horse, which Niegall apparently had, (who knew?) which is one of the main reasons he is still with us today.
And to his surprise, a place that's the backside of nowhere according to your average sophisticated Karatin cosmopolitan turned out to be a bustling hub of trade, its earth trampled by caravans that raise clouds of dust into the air as if the town was a nest of dragons lighting up trails of smoke from the grassy plain in five directions at once. It also turned out that the town's governor already had enough assistant bean-counters, but that a project to study the local Raumathari ruins (a driving passion of the governor) needed some volunteers to study the other empire, the one that Old Raumathar had done war with long ago: Narfell.
