PROLOGUE
The giantspire mountains has long since known to be a savage place, ruled by trolls, barbarian tribes and other denizens tough enough to endure the rugged place. This tale then begins in this setting. A setting of the big mountains, of big barbaric creatures, big obstacles, and even bigger than them all, a bigger heart.
Deep within the well hidden heights of the giantspire mountain, lies the village of red rock, home to the iron axe tribe. As one of the tribes dwelling in a place meant only for the tough or savage or both, the hidden iron axe tribe is no doubt one of the most remarkable clans.
As other tribes stand out usually by ruthlessness or great prowess, the iron axe stood out only by one thing: their love for one another. Contrary to the common culture of "the strong shall survive" of the other tribes, the iron axe have always believed in looking out for one another, and it is this culture that distinguishes the iron axe and enable it to survive.
ā-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a clear day thought to be normal, a trade caravan was travelling north from the city of peltarch to hoarsgate. Halfway along the narrow route within the giantspire mountains, angry shoutings was heard then followed the sightings of men with coloured paint on their faces jumping out with weapons from the trees. The caravan guards quickly fell to the sudden ambush, having almost no time to react. Within minutes, all that remained were corpses and the debris of what was once a caravan. As the aggressors scavenged through the supplies greedily, their leader look menacingly at a crying child, no more the height of his knee. As he contemplated, a sharp wizzling sound was heard, some of his men have fallen on the ground still.
Another group of tribesmen, with different paint marks jumped out and attacked them. The surprised tribals look up and began to fight fiercely and bravely, swinging with great force and savagery. The new comers did not seem as formidable as them at first, however one could notice the new comers were actually more united in their attacks, flanking together against the same targets and defending each other while the surprised tribals simply went berserk each in their own paths. In time, the first group fell.
The new victors quickly took to the spoils. But something caught their eye. A crying halfling child, was beating on the corpses of their foes. They glared at the child in silence.
Dietrick grew along in the village of red rock. The tribals have taken pity and adopted him into their village, having inspired by his will to fight despite a young age. He played and was trained along with all the other children of the iron axe tribe, being taught the basic survival and martial skills. Often teased for his size, Dietrick was never discouraged but worked harder to prove himself. In time he grew to become a muscled youth, with strength that equals many of his much larger peers.
And Finally that day came which would change this warrior forever. In the village of red rock, when the men matures to an age of eighteen or so, they would volunteer to enlist into the iron axe army. The group responsible for protecting and hunting for resources for the village. It was the dying passion and desire of every youth who matures to do so, it is the way of the iron axe tribesman.
As all his peers did so, Dietrick naturally followed. However... the chief of the tribe refused him. Dietrick was disheartened. He knows why. Amongst the tribals, he is strange. The only one being small in size, the only one who held a name that's outworldly. He was "adviced" to be a smith in the village at best, was told it suited him most. Dietrick however would not have it, for he always remembered the martial teachings since young, that "it isn't the strength of one's arm that makes one a warrior, but the boldness to be fearless in one's heart". This had always been Dietrick's guiding principle.
Thus naturally rebelling at the thought of having one's destiny fixed by others, Dietrick decided he'd once again fight to prove himself. Thus one moonless night, he sneaked out, out of the village, out into the woods, out into the mountains.
Besides not wanting to be stuck with menial jobs for life, Dietrick have always pondered what it was like, in the outside world. Having only heard the colourful tales of it by the elders. His heart beat fiercely, enticed by the dangers and wonders the outside world could offer. He has decided he will go out into the world out there, the world the village condemned as "more dangerous than the world they lived in". He will prove himself: by becoming triumphant in this so called "world too dangerous to venture out into". He will hone: to become a warrior greater than any his village knew. And he will master: the sword all including himself believed too big for him to wield. Let his life be a mocking reflection to the "giants" who believed his race to be lessers at.
Thus begins the tale of "THE HIN SIZED SWORD WIELDING HALFLING".
