Budo Dankpyre

    Account: Artyste

It was a dark and stormy night…

But aren't they all, when it really comes down to it? This was a special dark and stormy night, however, for it heralded the birth of one that was destined to change the world.

In another part of Faerun, however, Budo Dankpyre was also born.

The product of Barbarian parents in the land of Rashemen, Budo was identified as a... special child... at a very early age. While even the adults of Budo's tribe would never be considered intelligent by any stretch of the imagination, Budo's lack of development as he grew older began to worry both his parents, and the elders of the tribe. As a toddler, he'd frequently wander off and seemed to become lost within himself at times. His speech was sporadic and hard to follow, even into his early teenage years. It became apparent that a certain amount of very individualized teaching was going to have to be set for young Budo.

His parents began early. Instilling in him the only thing Budo seemed to understand. Fear. They taught him about the god Talos, one that the tribe did not follow themselves, but was used as a bedtime story to scare younglings into good behaviour. For Budo, however, Talos became a symbol of stability, both for his inability to keep thoughts together, and for his habit of running off wildly and almost getting himself killed by the various creatures in the land... which Budo can be found affectionately referring to as "Baddies".

While most would find it, at best ironic, and at worst blasphemous, that Talos would be such a solid positive role model in one's life, for Budo, it was the only way. His parents had to control him and find a way to center his mind, and the fear of the god Talos coming down and "punishing" Budo if he did not concentrate on his learning and behaviours, seemed to be the only thing that worked. That fear seemed to penetrate whatever ills plagued his mind, and slowly Budo grew to learn to speak better, control his wild urges, and on rare occasions, even have sudden and unexplainable bursts of truly cognitive thought.

However, as much as this training could do, it was not a miracle. Budo remained slower than all his other peers, and while they grew to have families and contribute to the tribe, Budo simply grew. He became a very large man, but his mind remained very child-like, innocent, and difficult to control. His main purpose, it seemed, was to continue to go out and "bash the baddies", as he believed Talos willed it. On a number of occasions, this resulted in Budo racing back to town screaming with a large number of these "baddies" on his tail... creating havoc and putting others in danger.

For a long while, Budo's father convinced the tribe that he could keep Budo under control for the most part, and for the most part, succeeded. However, Budo's father was himself a rash man, and prone to sleeping around the village. As a result, he contracted a rare illness that the shamans could not seem to cure, and died shortly after. Budo's mother was left alone with her son... an almost child in a man's body, and she knew that at her age, it would be too much.

The tribe felt that it was now time to act. Budo was put on a training regimen designed to show him the basics of living alone. He was taught to cook simple meals. He was taught how to survive nights in the wilderness. He was taught many other simple things that one should know... and Budo seemed to grasp them. Whether or not he had one of his rare cognitive moments, or whether some deeper instinct kicked in, Budo took to these new tasks like none other before. He also seemed to sense that something exteremely important was about to happen, and became restless as a result.

After a few months, the elders decided Budo was ready, and called him into the circle. He was to be sent into the lands, he was told, to find his way and his calling. He was to learn the ways of the barbarian, and find out about a world larger than the village he'd grown up in. He was to become a man. At least, this was the lip service given to him... but what it came down to was that Budo was being sent away, because the tribe did not wish to deal with this man-child anymore.

So it was that Budo set off into the lands, and wandered for many days, following no particular road. It is a small miracle in itself that Budo finally came upon a town without any serious injury, or death, in the land of Narfell to the north and west. While at first it was to be a temporary stop. A place of rest and re-stocking, Budo met a few people that seemed to enjoy his company. He joined in a few goblin raids, and a feeling stirred that he hadn't had in the few towns he'd crossed before... a feeling somewhat like belonging.

So the short rest grew into a few days.. the days to a few weeks.. and Budo remains in Norwick... and even he knows not how long his stay will now be.
