It was dark in the forest. No moon, just a shallow light. A man, broken by betrayal, wounded by battle, was desperately trying to stay alive in this cold winter night. He was wandering alone, fleeing, hiding from trees to trees. Then he fell in the dark. While keeping his eyes closed, to weak to open them, he suddenly realized that he was moving. Yes, yes… There were people. Was it Berron, his friend who turned against him and allied with orcs for some gold? No, those people were talking a language he couldn’t understand. They were almost singing… Then he went dark, again.
It was a beautiful night for Mÿrel Dannode’lin, one of those winter nights where you just want to walk, hearing the sound of the snow under your feet; the calling of the wind in the trees. So this is what she was doing, accompanied by Frandor, her only son. She was telling him again the story of his father. How he lived, and how he died right before Frandor came to life. Before the end of the story, Mÿrel and Frandor saw a group of people, lightly armed, coming back from a patrol, as they see it every day. But this time, something was different. They were in a hurry, heading toward the village and carrying a man. By curiosity, also from the advice received by the patrol leader about the security of the woods, they followed the group down to the village. The man was badly hurt.
This is how my parents meet, 55 years from now. My father, Talin, woke up some days after he was rescued by this elven patrol. The community leader agreed that he could spend some time in the village while recovering from his wounds. It took no time before my mother and he meet. Actually, she was helping him recovering. This is how they feel in love. But of course, life is not that simple. Mÿrel’s parents were against that union, so they ask the community leader to force Talin to leave after recovering. Why an elfe should ever fall in love with a man; too much suffering. So Talin left, but they continued to see each other often, because he established himself in the city of Essembra, just north of the community, situated in the Dalelands, near Cormyr. Then, 2 years later, I came to life.
I was raised by my mother in the same elven community. Fortunately, I did see my father often, because he was visiting us. All my childhood was about wandering in the forest, tracking animals and making myself some histories of adventures. I used to read a lot of tales, which fascinated my brother, about the adventures of the Realms’ heroes. My destiny was not to stay in a small community, but to travel and to see the world.
Living in a small village, deep inside the woods, has taught me a lot a things. Actually, it formed my behaviour. I learned to be one with nature, to respect it and to take advantage from it. I learned to be alone, reserved, and even to use the shadows of the trees to stay hidden, tracking animals just for fun. My facility to establish a link between me and nature saved me some troubles, especially when I came face to face with the bear I was tracking.
My brother was really important to me. He has taught me a lot of things, especially how to defend myself; the rudiments of using of a sword and a bow, for attack and for protection. He was good at this, as far as I know. Then, he felt his time had come to start travelling and make some gold. So he was leaving for some time and coming back after the work was done, telling us all the wonderful things he experienced. He did this for almost three years. His last appointment was to escort a caravan to a region called Narfell, situated N-E from our village. It has been almost a year and we didn’t receive any notice of how he was doing. We began to fear that something might have happened to him, because he should have come back.
This is when I realized that my time had come. The small community in which I was living had nothing more to offer me than a peaceful life and I was really growing anxious about my brother. So I decided to start adventuring, beginning of course with Narfell. It took me almost 6 months to get there, from caravan to caravan, using the protection that they could offer me for some gold. This protection saved my life, but not so often, because we suffered few attacks. I even had the chance to use what my brother taught me.
The trip has been wonderful. There is so much to see outside my home. And now I’m here, wandering in this region called Narfell, looking for my brother and exploring life. My first stop: Norwick.
