Bandits Beware

  • _There has been an unnerving increase in crime of late. Starting as petty break-ins and thievery, it has quickly escalated to armed robbery in the night, assaults, and banditry on the Nars Pass outside the North gate. Several victims of the recent crime spree, such as old defenseless farmers and recently widowed wives, have began expressing their outrage to the dwindling number of redcloaks about town, who barely have enough men for patrols to keep the goblins of the Rawlinswood at bay.

A lean Raumviri, known as chief Bron of clan Orel, stands determined as he addresses the townsfolk one evening with Davos, a few redcloaks, and many Raumviri of clan Orel standing proudly behind him.

"Bandits, the lowest kind of scum on this world. I don't know what hole these vagabonds have crawled from, but I give my word, my clan and I will see that these type of coward men are rooted out and exterminated. This town is not the easy pickings they think it is, and they will find the ropes no more comfortable around their necks here then wherever they came from."

Soon after, a new gallows is constructed by the Orel tribe in the center of the fair grounds. It is an immense structure of intimidation, with enough room for three hangings at a time. A symbol of his seriousness and a message to anyone intending to commit further criminal activities. The structure is met with approving nods from many townsfolk, who are sick of walking home in fear and seem to support this harsh attitude toward dealing justice to the bandits plaguing their home._

  • Not long after the leader of the Orel Clan and the Troff Legion we're seen meeting at the Great Hall, the banditry plaguing the Nars Pass almost instantly stopped. Perhaps it was the threat of this combined force or perhaps it was all the new eyes in town carefully watching the shadows, whatever the case, no organized banditry has been reported in the Nars for nearly a year and it seems the town of Norwick is returning to the simple peace of it's enemies being green skinned and outside it's walls.

The townsfolk have begun to live easily once more, but everyone in Norwick knows that peace only ever lasts as long as it takes for next goblin tribe to rise out of the Rawlins, and its been quiet for too long…

  • The red-haired ranger and cleric Shesarai has been seen about town a lot recently. She seems to have taken up residence in the Grapevine again, though she often goes out at night and returns before dawn. She doesn't say a lot, but she's always looking and observing.

  • _Another wave of goblins and wolves came pouring forth from the Howling Woods, rebuffed by the combined efforts of six adventurers. A small but determined number of goblin assassins attempted to break through to Norwick proper, the sole succeeding one effectively chopped down by the dwarven guardsman.

Rumour has it that one of the fallen goblins, a minor leader figure, had a substantial amount of gold in its pockets (aside from the traditional goblin lint). Where might a greenskin have come across such riches?_

  • _The bodies of three unknown travellers are brought into town by a group of adventurers, all bearing stab wounds. Likely the banditry on the roads north of town took yet another toll, but worse was yet to come as alarm bells rang out from the south.

Goblins, scores of them, joined by a big pack of fearsome wolves under their control massed near the Howling Woods, attacking relentlessly until two guardmen were down for the count. In the general mayham, a goblin assassin slipped past the defenders to claim the life of a Norwick commoner. Things are going from bad to worse, it seems…_

While the majority of the Orel tribe was hunting the Nars Pass for bandits, several homes were broken into during the night. The owners of the homes have yet to be found and are considered kidnapped.

Meanwhile, Davos is asking adventurers from across the land to assist the Redcloaks in stemming a rising tide of goblins from the Rawlinswood so that they can focus their efforts on the banditry within the walls.

  • Word spreads of more bandits being found and killed in the trees close to the Dwarven Hold's tower by General Theaon of the Troff Legion, Shesarai of Peltarch, and Rasuil of the Crafter's Union. Could these bandits be inching their way further north?

  • Despite the determined efforts of rangers and authorities alike, banditry still plagues the town, creating an atmosphere of fear and hate amongst the people. Angry shouts of protests from some particularly upset farmers begin to erupt, accusations that the town is still not doing enough to protect them.

In response, chief Bron, atop a grand stallion in engraved steel armor, suddenly gathers his tribe one evening and sets out of the North gate. The tribe quickly separate into small groups and move North to efficiently scan the entire Pass. As the sun rises the next day, Chief Orel proudly leads his dirtied tribe into the town center with two dozen bloodied scalps hanging from his horse's saddle. Many townsfolk cheer gratefully as he strides his horse straight to the town center with his warriors in tow.

"Proud people of Norwick! We have returned victorious, we hunted the dishonorable vermin through the night, and we we're merciless when we came upon them!"

He holds up several gory scalps tied together as his tribe bang their spears and shields together.

_"The bandits have fled from the Pass for now! But… I fear that they will return... They have only become more organized and better equipped since they started infesting our home. Unless we are more determined to be rid of this infestation now, this may just be the beginning of their reign of terror and the end of this town's once peaceful reputation...

But I refuse to allow this! We must not allow our enemies to gain any edge on us! If we can all come together and contribute to this cause in whatever way we can, I know these bandits will not be able to withstand our efforts united!"_

At that, the chief rides straight to the Great Hall while the grateful townsfolk give small donations and thanks to the tribe before dispersing. Not a protest is heard amongst the crowd.

  • After a flurry of recent activity, there haven't been any bandits seen or heard in the woods north of Norwick for the past several days. The number of rough-looking customers in the Grapevine tavern also has been greatly reduced, although beggars are still out and the floating crap game carries on behind the Inn. Citizens have noticed Raumviri guards standing watch on top of most of the tallest hills around Norwick. Perhaps the stern measures taken by the Militia are finally bearing fruit.

On the other hand, what's with the strange mist on the floor of the Grapevine? Mist has also been reported near the entrance to Silver Valley and the ponies usually kept there are gone.

  • Private Alvaniel can be seen taking post in the Watchtower just outside of Norwick, keeping a keen eye for any activity during the nights. Only once has she found a bandit in the tower, and he was dispatched. She will return each night to resume her post.

  • Shesarai Foutopolis came running into North Gate shouting for the guards. When she saw a Norwick militiaman, she reported that there was a group of bandits high on the hill east of the road in the Nars Valley. She asked for reinforcements, but the Militiamen said most of their troops were out on patrol at the moment. If it could wait till later then they would be glad to send someone.

She told them she would seek help from the Legion instead as otherwise travelers might get ambushed. She then left via North Gate. Sometime later, she returned and reported that the threat had been taken care of. She met General Theaon of the Troff Legion near the Crossroads and he helped her take on the bandits. There were three of them, equipped with leather armor and armed with bows and an axe. They were quite a bit tougher than the other bandits that have been encountered, but were no match for General Theaon's earth elemental. All were killed.

  • _After more reports of caravan attacks, Chief Bron of clan Orel gathers a dozen of his clansmen and stomp out onto the Nars Pass with a fierce determination. They are gone the entire day, mostly seen combing the forests along the Pass, but return just before dawn marching through the North gate dragging three dirty, beaten men chained together in a line. One old man in particular has trouble keeping his footing.

They are immediately taken into custody, and after a short exchange between Davos and chief Bron, the bandits are dragged up to the gallows.

The men each sob for their lives and exclaim their innocence as the noose is pulled tight around their necks, all but the old man, who simply keeps his head lowered throughout the procedure.
