Whispers at the Fire

  • Yet another gate attack goes being talked about in Norwick. Waves upon waves of powerful undead marched upon the city. Residents took arms and fought these monsters for the better part of the evening, until the guards finally woke up from their slumber to assist the brave adventurers.

In th aftermath, 8 guards were killed by the hand of a powerful undead knight who threatened to kill all norwickians. The same fate could possibly have awaited the defenders, were it not for the sun who rose promptly and caused it to flee. Praise Lathander!

  • There was another undead attack on the South Gate last night. Waves and waves came. In addition to the usual rat zombies, pig zombies, profaned zombies, skeletal warriors, and big bugbear zombies, there were some new types: kuo toa zombies?

A large group of defenders led by Norwick Defender Albryanna successfully held them off. The defenders included Mark, Cyrian, Kristover, Silver, Shesarai, and Mooncandies. After the last wave had been defeated, Albry called for a counterattack and led the party to the Graveyard. More skeletal warriors, firebows, and kuo toa zombies indicated they were on the right track. After several battles below, the group found a portal in the lower crypts leading to a cavern. Illithid mind-flayers were controlling the undead via some kind of contraption. The Norwick Defenders defeated then and their undead minions, and supported by elven cleric Raryldor who helped them figure out the portal system, made their way back to town. What next?

  • _Duegar corpses are drug from the Union Hall by a disgruntled red warrioress to outside the southern walls where they are set ablaze upon a hastily-constructed pyre. It would seem they were able to make it halfway through the town before being felled by a handful of Union members.

Those involved wasted not a moment in conducting a visit of their own to the dark tunnels exiting Aura Runedar._

  • A massive hoard of goblins, mostly little runt-like ones, attacked Norwick's South Gate last night. The assault began with a few rock throwers and soldier-types attempting to batter down the gates. Dwarf Paladin of Torm Silver and the cleric of Mystra Shesarai were on the inside and quickly summoned two defenders from the Norwick Militia. Although the gates finally were battered down, the four defenders made mincemeat of the first wave of about a dozen goblins.

More were coming, however. The second and third waves had over 60 goblins each, mostly runts, but with a few larger and stronger ones thrown in. While the guards and the dwarf paladin engaged them in melee, Shesarai and the elf cleric Raryldor, who arrived just in time, cast Hammer of the Gods, Flame Strike, and Ice Storms, which took out 30 or more goblins at a time.

Still not cowed, the goblins sent in fresh waves, which were similarly dealt with. Raryldor taunted the goblin leaders, and they responded to the challenge by attacking on their own. They were about half a dozen casters, archers, and an elite fighter or two. None survived and the defenders were only mildly winded. The remaining goblins fled, except for a single suicidal archer, who tried to sneak in on his own long after the fight was over. Silver took care of him.

  • Skeletal bones and putrid zombie bits lie scattered about and in heaps near the gates of Norwick and in the fields beyond, clear signs of an attack on a larger scale. A curious rumour has it that a sword, glowing red, was seen during the attack, floating in the air of its own accord and leading the adventurers off to the graveyard and crypts beyond. A red sword, undead… are the days of dread Herald Fendon not a thing of the past after all?

  • _Darkness descended suddenly upon the Norwick gates, too swift for nightfall proper. A small gathering of adventurers, speaking of past attacks to the Norwick gates no less, were suddenly subjected to just that as a wave of vile undead creatures poured out from the darkness.

Amidst the putrid flesh of zombies and the bare bones of skeletal warriors came a sudden flash of metal, moving at alarming speed. A vampire, resisting all of the unprepared adventurers attempts to defy it…

It is said two guards were brutally cut down by the vampire, and one adventurer was left hovering between life and death before Yllalyn's expert healer skills could stabilize him. As dawn approached, the vampire abandoned his games, but was ultimately chased down and destroyed by Raryldor, a late arrival to the scene._

  • Just around midnight, a young cougar sprints across Norwick. It looks like the beast appeared from thin air near the main camp fire and saw itself forced to make a run for the gates. Fortunately enough for the dangerous looking animal, its nature-engineered perfect stride was too swift for the armoured guards to keep up with. The animal made its final escape by climbing the south gate tower with a couple of leaps, and with a final, powerful leap, landing past the walls and into the safety of the forests where any further chase would be fruitless. It doesn't appear like any Norwickian was hurt either in this peculiar incident without consequences.

  • Four adventurers were seen coming back through South Gate from a successful trip through the coal mine and Goblin Hold. As they laid out their spoils and toted up their earnings, they told fantastic tales, one of which was difficult to believe. Did the gnome arcanist Jimmeh Doojigger actually kill a goblin by beating him over the head with a trout?

  • Further rumour say that the gnomish arcanist Jimmeh got a face-full of fireballs at the Norwick gates, curtesy of.. Jimmeh? The blast of magic and screaming drew a small crowd to the (hopelessly cindered) gates, where the aggressor-Jimmeh swiftly turned himself invisible and ran off into the Rawlins.

  • Rumors spread about the man in red full plate and horned helmet, Dermin, entering through the north gate almost beaten to death and going straight the infirmary. When the nurses asked about his condition he replied plain and surly that he fought against a man that looked exactly as himself near the Sam's hill, or Sam's hole, and that it was like fighitng his reflection in a mirror, same skills, same weapons and armors, same drank potions. Eventually the posser ran away as a coward. But facing the man who tried to take Dermin's place in this world was a damn good fight.

  • _*In a day like any other, the common eye can see the two beautiful redhead daughters of Jerrick sitting together by the fire having an odd conversation wearing worry and confusion in their gestures.

The more trained eye however could see that there is more to it than just a family gathering. Something just doesn't sit right as suddenly one of the girls startled and fled the scene after casting an invisibility spell. The other girl came yelling after the first asking her to wait, without much success*_

  • Lonely swordsman in leather armour can be seen by South Norwick Gate. When asked what he's doing there, he answers that he's waiting for mages to escort them if neccessary. So their spells are not wasted against lesser enemies.

  • A cloaked dwarf at the fire chuckles as the adventurers run by.

Bah! If I shat meself everytime I saw a furball south o these gates, I'd be sittin on a mountain o dung!

After a few minutes of sipping his ale and finishing off his pipe-smoking, he heads off to the south, axe in hand.

  • Three adventurers: Silver, Shesarai, and Jimmeh; were seen fleeing breathlessly through the South Gate. Panting, they warned the Norwick guards and any others around that they were attacked by bugbears in the goblin woods south of the lake. "There were at least two of em", one an archer. Might be more."

Is Norwick in for another series of bugbear-led attacks on the gate? Who knows. Since some time has passed with no attack, perhaps those bugbears were just expanding their territory. Or just maybe, they are guarding something?

  • Willow could be seen dashing from the farmsteads with a cackling brown rooster clutched to her chest, laughing all the way to the gates.

  • Silver, Shesarai, and Dermin were heard near South Gate marveling at strange sights to the south. They claimed they found a mummy in the Eastern Rawlingwoods. Shesarai insisted it had been summoned, and all three of them claimed it paid no attention to them, but went about killing hobgoblins by the dozens. Are the hobbers suffering undead problems too? Who summoned this mummy and is it a freind or a foe?

  • The south gates stand, bravely intact despite numerous attacks in recent months. But the benches seem made of flimsier stuff, as all of them have been reduced to ashes now. First the fire of many a goblin grenade took two benches out, then a veritable barrage of lightning appears to have hit the remaining ones. The grass is blackened around the ever-lasting cookpot, the mysterious contents of which is likewise scorched by lightning, the hard crust cracked in places for the stewy, ooey inside to seep out. A curious rumour has it that an animation attempt took place, yet so far, the stew remains seem reassuringly placid. For now…

  • Thurlow Pennypicker, gold hoarder extraordinaire, drinks at the Norwick tavern and tells a baffling tale.

"Yeah, I'm pretty much a hero. I think she even knighted me. Only paid me eighty gold though!"

He explains that he found a Kelemvorite paladin out in the howling woods strapped to an explosive device by a mad man.

"Basically I effortlessly disarmed them no sweat. Then she kissed me on the cheek."

Thurlow further explains that she had a contract on her head and was abducted by the mad man from the local Norwick haunted graveyard area.

"Probably could have turned her in for a pretty penny to some sleezeballs. Never did find out who wanted the contract done. So yeah, then she knighted me in honour of the church of Kelemvore. Guess you can all call me Sir Pennypicker from now on."

It's hard to tell what is and isn't true, but some tell of him and a woman limping into town one afternoon with a corpse over his shoulder.
