An Ordinary Tale
Born in the small hamlet of Jiyyd to a farmer of no particular renown, Fink Genkson spent his younger days as a farm hand, often assigned the chore of catching and feeding the ever-restless chickens. This proved to be no easy task, and through years of work, he acquired a certain quickness in his movements not seen amongst most farmhands.
At the age of thirteen summers, and being the oldest son, Fink's father, Genk, gifted him with an old heavy crossbow. Genk explained to his starry-eyed son that he once used the crossbow to protect his family and friends from a horde of hobgoblins, fending them off with one well-placed bolt after another. Amazed by Genk's tale, Fink asked his father what he had to do to be as good an archer as his father was. His father explained that if he wanted something enough, and believed in himself, that all things were possible.
Taking Genk's words to heart, Fink spent much of his free time practicing with the crossbow. He wasted many afternoons chasing small game, perfecting his aim against even the nimblest of targets. He was determined to make a name for himself, and bring honor to his family as he believes his father once did.
But as his father grew older, Fink and his younger brother Tom took over the majority of the responsibilities at the farm. Many harvests passed, and their father, ever weakening, summoned the two brothers and their mother to his bed. He explained to the two that the farm was now theirs. Tom and Fink watched solemnly as their father spoke his last words to them. Genk spoke softly, the words little more than whispers in the wind. He reminded his younger son Tom to watch over his mother and to care for her. He then pulled Fink closer, telling Fink to never forget what he had told him.
With those words, the last breath of life left Genk. Fink lowered his head in respect for his father, whispering a soft prayer. He then placed a light kiss on his mother's forehead before embracing her. With a silent nod to his brother, Fink went to his room and gathered his equipment. Fink opened his dresser, packing his clothes into a small bag before a figure in the corner of his room caught his eye. He picked up the dust-covered crossbow, blowing the webs and particles of dirt from it as he ran a hand along the treated wood. Memories of his past flooded his mind as he nodded to himself.
Fink counted out a small handful of gold, leaving the rest with a note to his brother, asking that Tom take good care of the farm and their mother. With his equipment secured to his back and his crossbow in hand, Fink began his journey to the infamous town of Norwick, eager to see what adventures await him…
