I have been gone from the server for over 3 years and though I am not familiar with the event that started this, I doubt the dynamics have changed much on the low to high spread of group interaction. I think too often the players go in like a picnic outing and do not cover the strategy for each individual at the beginning of the quest. I have seen players justify recklessness or lack of planning due to their PC's alignment or character.
The DM's have always been flexible when dealing with different parties, the players need to be flexible within their characters to make the group work. If you have a high level and low level scout, maybe the high goes forward and the low watches the back. If you are squishy, have healing potions so experienced players can fall back and be healed. If your character refuses to conform to a group led strategy then they can leave in a huff or die. Ultimately the player makes the decision on how he will or will not conform to make a quest party work.
At the same time it is a group effort and the leaders need to "lead" in all it's meanings. Too often it looks like some sort of democracy with an hour of opinions flying around and no real strategy formed. PC's need to know their places in the main strategy before you cover the first step and then the leader adjusts it as situations change. This would also make it easier for the DM to make minor adjustments as the quest moves along.
Just my 2 cents worth. I usually died doing something stupid, or from a very poor plan my character should have pushed back on or walked away from.
